Shariq Nisar is Professor at Rizvi Institute of Management Studies and Research (RIMSR). Prior to joining RIMSR he worked at the Harvard Law School, USA as Senior Visiting Fellow. Before moving to academics Shariq spent over a decade and a half in the Indian finance industry developing financial products and services that aimed at improving financial inclusion and increased investment in socially responsible sectors. He made some seminal contributions to India’s financial sector by launching India’s first shariah index with the Bombay Stock Exchange, first mutual fund scheme and first venture capital scheme approved by the Indian capital market regulator, SEBI. He also played key role in the design and launch of Shariah Index at Chittagong Stock Exchange, Bangladesh. He was invited to make presentation before the Select Committee of Indian Parliament during the discussion on Insurance Amendment Bill 2015. Shariq continues to hold board positions at many companies.
On the academic side Shariq has been associated with many universities, colleges and institutes in designing academic courses, conducting researches and delivering workshops for faculty and industry professionals. He has established India’s first Center for Alternative Finance at ITM Business School. He has authored three books, one of which is used by the BSE Institute as text book for Islamic finance certification. His second book, Islamic Finance and Development (co-authored with Nazim Ali) was published by Harvard Law School, USA. His third book, Takaful and Islamic Cooperative Finance: Challenges and Opportunities (coedited with Nazim Ali) is published by Edward Elgar, UK, 2016. In addition, Shariq has authored 60 research papers and articles. He has participated in 37 international conferences and 33 National level conferences. Shariq served as Joint Editor of Islamic Economics Bulletin between 2000 and 2005. Shariq is recipient of PhD in Economics from Aligarh Muslim University, India.
For his contribution to Indian financial system Shariq received Skoch Digital Inclusion Award 2011 under the category inclusion of minorities in India's financial system on “Digital Inclusion Day”, New Delhi, September 1, 2011. He also received Honorary Award from Islamic Finance Forum of South Asia (IFFSA), Colombo for his contribution Indian finance industry through Islamic Finance. Shariq is associated with following as:
